The gel bed is a special type of waterbed. Waterbeds and gel beds therefore share many similarities. They offer numerous advantages over traditional foam or innerspring mattresses. As such, the gel bed can be considered a valid alternative to the waterbed. However, there is a subtle but important difference between a waterbed and a gel bed: the “firmness level” — known as the stabilization level in waterbeds — can be adjusted later on in gel beds.

Good to know: In principle, all bellvita waterbeds can be converted into gel beds! That means when purchasing a gel bed, you have access to the full range of bellvita models. Simply mention it to bellvita over the phone.

How is a waterbed turned into a gel bed?
To convert a waterbed into a gel bed, a special gel granulate is added to the vinyl core, which is then filled with water. The resulting chemical reaction forms a gel-like substance whose firmness can be adjusted by varying the amount of granulate used. The experienced bellvita installation team will calculate the exact amount of granulate required and work with you to achieve your desired gel mattress firmness. That way, your new gel bed will be perfectly tailored to your sleep and comfort needs.
Advantages of gel beds and waterbeds compared to traditional mattresses
Gel beds and waterbeds offer maximum hygiene
A gel bed is much more hygienic than a traditional mattress. Dust mites cannot nest in the vinyl surface. Gel beds are also easy to wipe clean and free from harmful substances. This makes gel beds and waterbeds from bellvita ideal for allergy sufferers.
Gel beds and waterbeds support every sleeping position
Gel beds share many additional benefits with waterbeds. A gel bed supports your body and helps prevent back pain. The gel mass adapts perfectly to your body in every sleeping position, making it ideal for stomach, side, and back sleepers.
Gel beds and waterbeds prevent back pain
Especially in the neck and lower back area, the gel bed fills the natural gaps that usually form between your body and a traditional mattress. This relieves pressure on your spine. Back pain and tension in the neck often disappear completely after just a few nights in a gel or waterbed. Sleeping in a bellvita gel or waterbed will noticeably improve your well-being.
Gel beds and waterbeds promote deeply restful sleep
With a dual gel bed, you can adjust the firmness of the gel individually for each side. A special divider between the two gel chambers significantly reduces the transmission of movement. In general, due to the stable nature of the gel, hardly any motion is transferred. The pressure-relieving gel adjusts perfectly and independently to both sides of the bed.
Enjoy a highly personalized sleep experience with excellent lying comfort — offering perfect support for your body throughout the night. Gel beds and waterbeds create no pressure points while sleeping, making them far more suitable for babies, children, the ill, and seniors than conventional mattresses! If you suffer from neck pain during sleep or often experience numbness in your legs or limbs on a standard mattress, these issues are often a thing of the past with a gel or waterbed.

All advantages of bellvita gel beds and waterbeds at a glance
- Pressure relief with excellent, even support for your body in every sleeping position
- Longer deep sleep phases and less back pain
- Customizable firmness that can be adjusted at any time using a saline solution
- Hygienic and ideal for allergy sufferers
Advantages of gel beds over waterbeds
- The stabilization level can be adjusted later
- In case of a leak, the gel does not escape as quickly
The selected firmness level can be changed at any time. A saline solution can be used to break down the gel firmness later on. This means the viscosity of the bellvita gel mattress can be re-adjusted even after many years. That’s the key difference between a gel bed and a waterbed.
Gel beds can be used with or without heating

Benefits of gel beds without heating
A heater is not strictly necessary because the gel effectively absorbs and stores your body heat. This allows you to sleep on a gel mattress without using electricity. The top and bottom sides of the gel mattress are well insulated. The top layer is especially thick. Compared to waterbed toppers, these covers are even softer and provide excellent comfort — even without a heater.
Benefits of using a gel bed/waterbed heater
While heating isn’t required, it significantly enhances your sleep comfort. With a heater, you can enjoy a well-tempered bed all year round. A heated gel or waterbed is especially recommended for people with muscle pain or those who get cold easily at night. Another benefit is that you won’t need heavy winter bedding. You can sleep year-round with a light duvet on your heated gel or waterbed. Heaters for dual gel beds are, of course, individually adjustable on both sides. In winter, you’ll stay warm and cozy, and in summer, the gel granulate helps you stay comfortably cool. A heater allows a gel bed to be tempered just as effectively as a waterbed, providing healthy and restful sleep in any season.
Gel beds provide the best protection for allergy sufferers
Another feature that gel beds share with waterbeds: house dust mites cannot settle in the mattress cover thanks to the special Medicott treatment. This unique bellvita cover for gel and waterbeds is specifically designed for allergy sufferers. The breathable surface of the gel bed cover ensures a healthy sleeping climate. Typically, all bellvita covers for gel and waterbeds are Ökotex certified.
